“We seek to create contact with clients. Contact over time creates connection. Connection over time creates relationship. Relationship over time creates intimacy. This relationship is the core of therapy; after all, what is injured in relationship is only healed in relationship.”
— Duey Freeman
Duey is a sought-after teacher, trainer, licensed therapist, and equine professional worldwide.
He has taught worldwide and developed a practical attachment theory and human development theory taught to thousands of university students.
He has nearly 80,000 direct client hours and co-founded the Gestalt Equine Institute and the Gestalt Institute of the Rockies.
He supervises therapists and graduate students and does business and land consultations for new equine therapy sites.
He embodies both tenderness and strength in all his relations and work. His quality of contact and relationship with others is authentic and unique. People come from around the world to study with him.
Duey is a true elder and mentor exploring new horizons in facilitating men’s growth work. Gestalt and Relational Horsemanship are not just approaches to Duey; they are how he walks through the world.
Duey was born on July 27th, 1950, in Akron, Ohio and raised in nearby Uniontown. The Amish farms, woodlands, open fields, creeks, and wildlife that surrounded his family home greatly influenced Duey’s passion for horses and his life path. He is second among four children to Alice and Robert Horner. His sister and brother continue living in Ohio, while his youngest brother passed away in 2008.
During Duey’s mother’s pregnancy with him, she was diagnosed with Tuberculosis. This resulted in instant separation from his mother at birth and they were not reunited until he was nearly 18 months old. Luckily his mother, Alice, survived. Upon their reunion, Alice is quoted as saying “he was like a neighborhood child,” indicating the emotional distance between mother and young son. This early, formative experience in attachment interruption later inspired Duey’s research, therapy work, and eventually the formation of his own attachment theory and human development model. Duey currently lives and works in the foothills west of Golden, Colorado with his 3 horses, Dillon, Moondash, and Spirit, and his partner, Kimberly Rose.
